In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon shared about, “a man to whom God has given riches, wealth, and honor, so that he wants nothing for his soul of all that he desires, yet God gives him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eats it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease”, and in chapter six and verse three of his book Solomon shared what happens, “if a man beget a hundred children” where we read,
If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.
The verse reads, “If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, …” Solomon began with the words, “if a man beget an hundred children” or “whether and in case a male human being bear, bring forth and engender one hundred offspring and progeny”, “and live many years” which means “and remain alive, live prosperously and be quickened for a numerous and abundant amount of annual sets of days”, “so that the days of his years” or “resulting in the sunrises to sunsets pertaining to his, the person who begets one hundred offspring, annual sets of sunrises to sunsets”, “be many” which means “exist as numerous and abundant in number”. Solomon considered the idea of a person engendering one hundred offspring and remaining alive for “years” which would result in the sunrises to sunsets of his “years” being numerous.
The verse goes on to say, “… and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.” Daniel continued with the words, “and his soul” or “and his, the person who engenders one hundred children’s, mind, heart and will” “be not filled with good” which means “is not in any way or manner sated, satisfied and surfeited by pleasantness, agreeableness, and excellence”, “and also that he have no burial” or “and even so and indeed that he, the person who engenders one hundred children, in no way or manner possess a grave, burial site or sepulcher”; “I say” which means “I, Solomon, utter, declare and proclaim”, “that an untimely birth” or “that an abortion or miscarriage” “is better than he” which means “exists as more pleasant, agreeable, excellent and superior compared to he, the man who engenders one hundred children”. Solomon said the heart, mind and will of a man who engenders one hundred offspring and does not receive a grave will in no manner be sated with pleasantness and agreeableness and would have been better off to have never been born.
When we think through words in this verse, we learn how Solomon employed an example of a person who engenders one hundred offspring, remains alive for along time but is in no way sated or satisfied and will not have a grave or burial. Solomon thought an “untimely birth” would have been better for him. (See Mark 14:21) God wants to have an eternal personal relationship with all of us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days so when we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and equip us with His Holy Spirit so regardless of the offspring we engender, our lives will be valued to a greater measure than an “untimely birth”.
Next time Solomon says, “he comes in with vanity, and departs in darkness”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
