In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon said, “to every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up”, and in chapter three and verse four of his book Solomon shared about, “a time to weep, laugh, mourn and dance”, where we read,
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
The verse reads, “A time to weep, and a time to laugh;” Solomon began with the words, “a time to weep” or “an occurrence and experience to bewail, cry and shed tears”, “and a time to laugh” which means “and an occurrence and experience to play, mock and make sport”. Solomon referred to the occasions for bewailing contrasted with the occasion of playing with enjoyment.
The verse goes on to say, “a time to mourn, and a time to dance;” Daniel continued with the words, “a time to mourn” or “an occurrence and experience to wail and lament”, “and a time to dance” which means “an occurrence and experience to skip, leap and spring about”. Solomon referred to the occasions for lamenting as well as the occasions for skipping and leaping about.
When we think through the words in this verse, we see how Solomon continued to contrast difficult times with happy times. Again, the idea is redundancy like “this, then that”, “this, then that”. God knows we all have times when we will “weep” and other times when we will “laugh”. He is aware that we experience times of “mourning” and other times when we are so happy we will leap about and “dance”. All of these occasions are meant to be experienced as we have a personal relationship with God through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. When we yield to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us who will guide us into all truth and provide His comfort and presence in whatever season we may be. (See John 16:13)
Next time Solomon shares about, “a time to cast away stones, gather stones, embrace and refrain from embracing”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
