In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon said, “Every man also to whom God has given riches and wealth, and has given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labor; this is the gift of God. For he shall not much remember the days of his life; because God answers him in the joy of his heart”, and in chapter six and verse one of his book Solomon said, “there is an evil which I have seen under the sun” where we read,
There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men:
The verse reads, “There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, …” Solomon began with the words, “there is an evil” or “there exists a bad, disagreeableness, malignancy, unpleasantness and displeasure” “which I have seen” which means “that I, Solomon, have perceived, noticed, discovered, discerned and observed” “under the sun” or “beneath the sun in the sky”. Solomon shared how he observed a disagreeable unpleasantness on earth and beneath the sun in the sky.
The verse goes on to say, “… and it is common among men:” Daniel continued with the words, “and it is common” or “and it, the unpleasantness, exists as great, abounding and numerous” “among men” which means “in the midst, middle and with people both male and female”. Solomon said the unpleasantness he observed was abounding in the midst of people.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon made another unpleasant observation as he was looking upon people who live upon the earth or “beneath the sun in the sky”. We shall see what that is in our next verse, but for now let us consider how observant Solomon chose to be. God wants us to be aware of ourselves and our surroundings, and when we consider that He knows we all have sin in our lives and come short of His glory, we realize our need for a Savior. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified for the sins of everyone, and He was raised from the dead after three days so when we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth as we “look around and within” to see where God may want to do a work.
Next time Solomon shares how God gives riches, wealth and honor to a man, “yet God gives him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eats it”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
