Riches, Wealth and Honor without Power to Consume It - Ecclesiastes 6:2

In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon said, “There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men”, and in chapter six and verse two of his book Solomon shared how God gives riches, wealth and honor to a man, “yet God gives him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eats it” where we read,

A man to whom God has given riches, wealth, and honor, so that he wants nothing for his soul of all that he desires, yet God gives him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eats it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.

The verse reads, A man to whom God has given riches, wealth, and honor, so that he wants nothing for his soul of all that he desires, … Solomon began with the words, “a man” or “a person whether male or female” “to whom God has given riches” which means “that the Supreme Deity has granted, bestowed, ascribed and assigned wealth”, “wealth” or “treasures and riches”, “and honor” which means “and glory, abundance, splendor, reputation and reverence”, “so that he wants nothing” or “with the result being that he lacks or has need for not one thing” “for his soul” which means “because, since and on account that his, the person whom God has given riches, wealth and honor’s, heart, mind and will” “of all that he desires” or “pertaining to each, every, the whole and everything that he, the person, waits longingly for, wishes, prefers and craves. Solomon referred to the person that the Supreme Deity grants “wealth, riches and honor” that are so abundant that they have no lack because their heart, mind and will have everything they crave.

The verse continues, “… yet God gives him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eats it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.” Daniel added the words, “yet God gives him not power” or “still and even so, the Supreme Deity does not grant, bestow, ascribe or assign the strength and ability” “to eat thereof” which means “to consume or devour the wealth, riches or honor”, “but a stranger eats it” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover a foreign, alien, unknown and unfamiliar person consumes and devours the wealth, riches and honor”: “this is vanity” which means “this, the consuming of the wealth, riches and honor by a foreign person, exists as vapor, breath and transitory dissatisfaction”, “and it is an evil disease” or “and it, the consuming of the wealth, riches and honor, exists as a bad, disagreeable, malignant, unpleasant and unhappy malady, anxiety, calamity and sickness”. Solomon referred to how the Supreme Deity does not grant to the person who has “wealth, riches and honor” the ability to consume their possessions, and instead, a foreigner devours it which Solomon considered as vapor, breath, transitory dissatisfaction and a malignant sickness.

When we meditate upon words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how he considered it emptiness for a person who has been given “wealth, riches and honor” by Jehovah God without the ability to consume them. Even though the person Solomon mentioned had possessions, they were unable to partake in them. God owns everything, and He not only disperses His belongings as He desires, but He also gives the ability to enjoy them. In other words, without Him we would have nothing. (See John 15:5) God loves us, and He provided His greatest gift when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days. When we surrender our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and equip us with His Holy Spirit to be guided into all truth and learn how to enjoy His belongings according to His Divine purpose and will.

Next time Solomon shares what happens, “if a man beget a hundred children”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
