Two vultures
perched beside a lake
talked about
a swim
the water
high the depth at peak
for any to
venture in
The one said
“deep? not for me
for I know
how to fly”
the other
spoke “it's much too deep
we dare not
even try”
For food were
they upon a look
their hunger
struck them both
and though
the water dangered them
they vowed to
take an oath
The first he
promised he would start
the second
pledged he too
would venture
on the deepened lake
that they
might find some food
At once the
first he took a step
and touched
his toe within
but taken
quickly back withdrew
twas much too
cold for him
The second
said he'd give a try
and put his
hook without
before his
claw did feel the cold
his soul
began to doubt
To make
excuse they both began
lest they be
forced to sigh
though vow
they did the both of them
agreed not to
comply
The rain, the
winds, the clouds, the temp
each day a
new excuse
twas never
quite just right for them
to ever let
them loose
When suddenly
there flew about
a duck, a
goose, egret
all three did
make a great advance
and plunged
without a fret
For built
were they without the fear
the vultures
had inside
so dip within
began to swim
the
waterbirds with stride
Then flew in
too a vulture new
who did not
seem to care
and blindly
entered water lake
where
vultures gawking there
Twas then the
two upon the side
yelled out to
vulture in
“what made
thee tough as not to care
that you have
ventured in?”
Then vulture
in began to grin
and laugh at
two with stride
“it tis thy
fear that keeps you there
you two
afraid to try”
Then back and
forth the two did glance
the vultures
on the side
at one
another's fearful face
too obvious
to hide
And think
again the vultures there
about their
constant fright
and thus
decided not to try
and spread
their wings in flight
So never try
these fearful ones
the vultures
side the lake
who would not
venture take a swim
that great
too risk to take
