If Wonder Hope

If wonder hope had a name

what name would that name be

would if be the first and wonder mid

and hope the last you see?

If implies the doubt I have

for that which isn't known

wonder casts uncertainty

and hope it stands alone

If wonder hope by faith employed

the wavering effect

unset'ling place beneath belief

that brings my mind to wreck

For back and forth go all my thoughts

these thoughts that trouble me

relief I need I can not stand

if wonder hope I need

For vacillating back and forth

the facts within my mind

I dare not trust the one without

the other one sublime

Yes far from peace this cursed result

this infectious disease

the cogitations of my mind

doth never lend me ease

If I could mark a name upon

If wonder hope I've seen

I'd gladly alter the unknown

to solid certainty

But alas I have no power

to alter unbelief

If wonder hope shall be my plague

till dying breath I leave
