Paul
the apostle desired that the Corinthian church members understand he
and his companions were “the
ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God”,
and in chapter four and verse two of First
Corinthians, Paul told the Corinthians “it
is required in stewards” to
“be found faithful”
where we read:
Moreover
it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.
The
verse begins, “Moreover
it is required in stewards,,...”
Paul began
with the word, “Moreover” which
means “henceforth, for the rest and besides” “it
is required”
or “it is demanded and striven for” “in
stewards”
which means “chamberlains, overseers, teachers, bishops, governors
and managers of household affairs”. Paul set forth the
“requirement” for people who are “caretakers” especially of
the “gospel”.
The
verse continues, “...that
a man be found faithful.”. Paul
added the words, “that a man” which
means “that a certain one or person” “be
found” or
“be discovered, learned and understood to be” “faithful”
which means “trusty, can be relied upon and worthy of trust”. The
person who “cares for” the “gospel”
of Jesus
Christ must be one who can be “relied upon and trusted in”.
When
we consider these words from Paul, we understand the importance of
being a “reliable and trusted” person who cares for the
“gospel” message. Let us notice, this is not an “expectation”
of “stewards”, it is a “requirement” or
“demand”. Those who share the “good news” of Jesus Christ
with others must “strive to” be a “trustworthy” person, and
although no one is perfect, the standard should always be “completely
faithful”. Perhaps an examination of our lives as “stewards”
of Jesus Christ and His “gospel” is in order, and should
we find areas of “mistrust and unreliability”, let us go to our
“Savior Jesus” in prayer and ask Him to help us to be “found”
as “faithful stewards”.
Next
time Paul tells the Corinthian church members, “it
is a very small thing that I should be judged of you”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
