Alpha, Omega, Beginning and End Revelation 1:8

John the apostle shared in his introduction of the book of “Revelation”, “Behold, he comes with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen”, and in chapter one and verse eight of “Revelation”, John shares Jesus' words, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending” where we read:

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, says the Lord,
which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

The verse begins, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, says the Lord, ...” John began with the words, “I am Alpha” which means “Jesus is the first which is derived from the first letter in the Greek alphabet” “and Omega” or “the finality or end which is derived from the last letter in the Greek alphabet”, “the beginning” which means “the origin, principality and extreme rule” “and the ending” or “the termination, limit at which a thing ceases to be and the last in succession or series” “says” which means “speaks, affirms over, maintains, exhorts, advises, commands, directs and mentions” “the Lord” which refers to he to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”. Jesus declared Himself to be “the first, last, origin and termination” of all things.

The verse goes on to say, “... which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” John added the words, “which is” or “who exists in the present”, “and which was” which means “who exists in the past”,“and which is to come” or “exists in the future”, “the Almighty” which refers to “the omnipotent ruler and absolute and universal sovereign”. Jesus exists in the present, past and future all at the same time which is affirmed by the “absolute sovereign” God.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn of the “eternal nature” of Jesus Christ. Jesus exists outside of time as we know it because He lives in the past, present and future all at once. When we think this through, we realize this One, this Messiah who exists outside of time has extended His love to all people, and the demonstration of His commitment was His dying on the cross. God desires to have everyone in a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they “yield” their lives to Him through “belief and trust”, they too shall inherit, “eternal, everlasting life”.

Next time we shall see John share how he, “was in the isle that is called Patmos for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
