John
the apostle saw the vision of Jesus in chapter one of “Revelation”,
and he began to write to the “seven
churches in Asia”. He
started with the church located in “Ephesus”,
then the “church
of Smyrna”,
the “church
in Pergamos”,
the “church
in Thyatira”,
“the
church in
Sardis”
and
“the
church in Philadelphia” where
He told them, “Behold,
I come quickly: hold that fast which you have, that no man take your
crown”,
and
he added, “Him
that overcomes will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he
shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God,
and the name of the city of my God, which
is
new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from my God: and I
will write upon him
my new name.”
In chapter three and verse thirteen of Revelation Jesus declared for
people who have “ears”
to “hear
what the Spirit says to the churches” where
we read:
He
that has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says unto the churches.
The
verse reads, “He
that has an ear, ...”
John
began with the words, “he
that has an ear”
which means “the person who hold, owns and possesses the body part
used for the faculty of hearing, perceiving, understanding and
knowing with the mind”, “let
him hear”
or “allow and permit that person attend to, consider, understand
and perceive”. Jesus called upon everyone who has the “capacity
for listening, perceiving and understanding”.
The
verse goes on to say, “... what
the Spirit says unto the churches.” John
continued with the words, ““what
the Spirit”
which means “that which the third person of the triune God, the
Holy Spirit who is coequal and co-eternal with the Father and the
Son” “says”
which means “speaks, utters, declares and proclaims” “unto
the churches”
which refers to “toward the assemblies of Christians gathered for
worship in a religious meeting”. Jesus desires for everyone to
“consider, understand and perceive” what God's “Spirit”
is
telling the “churches”.
When
we consider John's words in this verse, we see how Jesus declared the
same exhortation to the “church in Philadelphia” as He did
the other churches. God desires for people to have “listening ears”
and “obedient hearts” to what His “Spirit” says, and
those who have received His Son Jesus as their “Savior and Lord”
and part of His “church” should be “hearing” Him at
all times. May all who are reading these words “hear” and
“obey” the “Spirit” of the living God.
Next
time
we see John share how Jesus addresses, “the
angel of the church of the Laodiceans”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until
tomorrow…there is more…
