Immediately in the Spirit Revelation 4:2

John the apostle saw “a door was open in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up here, and I will show you things which must be hereafter”, and in chapter four and verse two of Revelation John was “immediately...in the spirit” where we read:

And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.

he verse reads, And immediately I was in the spirit:John began with the words, “and immediately” which means “and straightway and forthwith” “I was in the spirit” or “John was in the place devoid of all or at least all grosser matter, and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding, and acting”. After John was invited to “go up” into heaven and heard the loud voice, he entered into the “spiritual world”.

The verse goes on to say, “and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.” John added the words, ““and, behold” which means “and lo and see”, “a throne” which means “a chair of state having a footstool which was assigned to kings and therefore showing kingly power or royalty” “was set in heaven” or “was put in place and situated in the region above the sidereal heavens and the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings”, “and one sat” or “an entity was seated, fixed and dwelt” “on the throne” which means “upon the chair of state having a footstool which was assigned to kings and therefore showing kingly power or royalty”. When John entered into the “spiritual world”, he saw God sitting upon His “royal throne”.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we attempt to visualize what John saw when he entered into the spiritual world. In heaven, John saw “God” sitting upon His “throne”, and what an awesome sight this must have been. It is interesting to note this was the first thing he saw after entering heaven, and it makes us wonder if this shall be the first sight for those who have put their faith and trust in God's Son Jesus Christ. Oh what a glorious sight this must have been for John the apostle, and oh what a glorious sight “in the spirit” it shall be forevermore to those who receive Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time we see John observe, “he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone … and a rainbow round about the throne”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
