After
John the apostle saw the vision of Jesus in chapter one of
“Revelation”,
he began to write to the “seven
churches in Asia”. He
started with the church located in “Ephesus”,
then the “church
of Smyrna”,
and followed with the “church
in Pergamos” where
He told them,
“To
him that overcomes will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will
give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no
man knows saving he that receives it.”
In
chapter
two and verse eighteen of Revelation, John shared how Jesus
addressed, “the
church in Thyatira” where
we read:
And
unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith
the Son of God, who has his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his
feet are
like fine brass;
The
verse begins, “And
unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write;”
John began
with the words, “and unto the angel”
which means “to
the messenger, envoy, one who is sent and by implication the pastor”
“of the church”
or “pertaining
to the assembly of Christians gathered for worship in a religious
meeting”
“in Thyratira”
which means “a colony of Macedonia Greeks which is situated between
Sardis and Pergamos on the river Lycus; its inhabitants gained their
living by traffic and the art of dyeing in purple and means odor of
affliction” “writes”
which means “delineate
or form letters on a tablet, parchment, paper, or other material”.
John addressed Jesus' words to the “messenger or pastor” of the
“church in Thyratira”.
The
verse continues,
“These
things says the Son of God, who has his eyes like unto a flame of
fire, and his feet are
like fine brass;”
John
added the word, “These
things”
or “that
which John is about to write”
“says”
which means “speaks,
utters, proclaims and declares”
“the
Son”
or “ the term used preeminently of Jesus Christ, as enjoying the
supreme love of God, united to him in affectionate intimacy and privy
to his saving councils while being obedient to the Father's will in
all his acts” “of God” which refers to “the Godhead bodily
and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and
the Holy Spirit”, “who
has his eyes”
which means “Jesus has vision and sight” “like
unto a flame” which
means “as a blaze or flash” “of
fire”
or “fiery lightning” “and
his feet”
or “the feet of Jesus”
“are like fine brass”
which means “are as some metal like gold if not more precious”.
The characteristics Jesus presented to the “church
in Thyratira”
was His “eyes”
which burned like “lightning” and His “feet”
which were as “burnished brass”. (See Revelation 1:14-15)
When
we consider John's words in this verse, we can imagine how Jesus
approached the “church in Thyratira”.
The “purifying justice” within Jesus' “eyes”
and “feet”
was upon this church which relates to the development
of the Roman Catholic system. Each
church age has it's corresponding attention from Jesus, and the
“church of Thyratira”
was no exception. God desires to have a relationship with every
person, and His Son Jesus' “eyes”
and “feet”
are able not only to have insight into their lives, but also is able
to bring “purifying justice” to them. May all who read these
words take heed to the words Jesus shares with the “church
in Thyratira”.
Next
time
John writes how Jesus tells the “church
in Thyatira”,
“I know your works, charity, service, faith, patience and works”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until
tomorrow…there is more…
