Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus said, “the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away. So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Jesus says unto them, Have you understood all these things? They say unto him, Yes, Lord”, and in chapter thirteen and verse fifty-two of his book, Matthew wrote how Jesus tells His disciples about, “every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven” where we read:
Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which brings forth out of his treasure things new and old.
The verse reads, “Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, ...” Matthew began with the words, “then” which means “at that moment and time” “said he” or “Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “unto them” which means “to the disciples”, “therefore” or “by means of these things” “every scribe” which refers to “each, all, the whole and everyone of the clerks, secretaries, recorders and those learned in the Mosaic law and in the sacred writings as interpreters and teachers” “which is instructed” or “who is taught and follow precepts and instructions” “unto the kingdom” which means “towards the dominion and rule” “of heaven” or “belonging to the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings” “is like unto” or “is similar and in likeness to” “a man” which refers to “a male human being” “that is an householder” or “the goodman or master of the house”. Matthew shared how Jesus presented another illustration concerning the “kingdom of heaven” as He declared it to be like a “master of a house”.
The verse continues, “... which brings forth out of his treasure things new and old.” Matthew added the words, “which brings forth” which means “who draws out and causes a thing to move straight on its intended goal” “out of his treasure” or “from the master of the house's storehouse, repository, magazine and collected treasures” “new” which means “recent, unused and unworn things” and “old” or “ancient, worn by use, worse for wear and no longer new things”. Matthew shared how those who are instructed in the word of God are like “householders” who “draw out” “treasures” both “new and old” from their storehouses.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how those who study the scriptures and become followers of Jesus Christ bring forth “old and new” “treasures” from their “storeroom”. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to “save” people from their sinful lives and has promised to give them “everlasting life” when they receive Him as “Savior and Lord”. This allows for people who have read and studied the law of God not only to know what God has declared, but also be forgiven and challenged for forsaking His Holy law. The fate of those who do not know Jesus Christ is horrific, but those who yield their lives to Him shall have “treasures” forevermore.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus departed when He, “finished these parables”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
