Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus, “sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. He answered and said unto them, He that sows the good seed is the Son of man”, and in chapter thirteen and verse thirty-eight of his book, Matthew wrote how Jesus began to explain the parable of the tares as He spoke of, “the world, the good seed and the tares” where we read:
The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom;
but the tares are the children of the wicked one;
The verse reads, “The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom;” Matthew began with the words, “the field” which means “the land, country, territory, farms and bit of tillage” “is the world” or “is the whole circle of earthly goods, endowments, riches, advantages and pleasures”; “the good seed” which means “the beautiful, handsome, excellent, eminent, choice, surpassing, precious, useful, suitable, commendable and admirable grain or kernel which contains within itself the germ of the future plants” “are the children” or “are the offspring, descendants and posterity” “of the kingdom” which means “belonging to the royal power, kingship, dominion and rule”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the “earth” is the “field” into which the sower scattered His “excellent and awesome” “seed”.
The verse continues, “but the tares are the children of the wicked one;” Matthew added the word, “but” which means “nevertheless, moreover and” “the tares” or “the darnels or bad seed” “are the children” which means “are the offspring, descendants and posterity” “of the wicked one” or “who belong to the annoying, evil, bad, diseased and full of peril being”. Matthew shared how Jesus declared the “bad seed” to the people who were the offspring of the “evil one”.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus interprets the parable of the “sower” who scattered good seed. Jesus Christ came into the world to share the “gospel” or “good news” of the Kingdom of God to all who will receive Him as “Savior and Lord”. God desires a loving relationship with every person, and He gave His Son to die for the sins of the whole world. Those who yield their lives to Him shall have accepted the “good seed”, however, those who do not expose themselves as “children of the wicked one”.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus told His disciples about the “tares” as He declared, “the enemy that has sowed them is the devil”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
