Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field”, and in chapter thirteen and verse twenty-five of his book, Matthew wrote how Jesus tells His disciples, “while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat” where we read:
But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.
The verse reads, “But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, ...” Matthew began with the word, “but” which means “nevertheless, moreover and” “while” or “at the time and moment” “men” which means “a group of male human beings” “slept” or “were sleeping or dropped of to sleep”, “his enemy” which means “the hated, odious, opposing one and hostile person to the man who sowed good seed in his field” “came and sowed” or “arose and appeared to scatter” “tares” which means “darnels which resemble wheat except the grains are black” “among the wheat” or “in the midst of, in between and amidst the good grain or corn”. Matthew shared how Jesus told of the “enemy” of the man who sowed “good seed” coming by nighttime and “sowing” darnels into the man's planted field.
The verse continues, “... and went his way.” Matthew added the words, “and went” which means “left, departed and passed out of” “his way” or “the enemy''s path, journey and way traveled”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the enemy of the man left after he carried out his dastardly deed.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how this man had good intentions with his “good seed”, however, unbeknown to him, in the nighttime his “enemy” scattered “tares” or bad seed among his “good seed”. This is representative of the kingdom of heaven. God scatters His “good seed” of the gospel of His Son Jesus Christ, and yet, there are “enemies” of Jesus who continue to share “words” and ideas that are wicked and evil. We shall see what Jesus says to do about these “bad seeds” in our next time together, but for now we shall realize we do not want to be enemies of God who “sow tares” among His “good seed” in this world.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus shares what happened, “when the blade was sprung up”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
