Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus fed the multitude which included five thousand men plus women and children, and afterward, “Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary”. In chapter fourteen and verse twenty-five of his book, Matthew shares how, “Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea” where we read:
And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
The verse reads, “And in the fourth watch of the night ...”. Matthew began with the words, “and in the fourth watch” which means “between three and six in the morning” “of the night” or “pertaining to the night time when men give themselves to slumber”. Matthew shared how the timing of this next event was between three and six in the morning.
The verse continues, “... Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.” Matthew added the word, “Jesus” whose name means “Jehovah is Salvation” and is “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “went unto them” or “departed and was gone toward the disciples”, “walking” which means “ambling and making progress” “on the sea” which refers to “upon the body of water in which the disciples were sailing”. Matthew shared how Jesus “walked” toward the disciples on top of the sea waters.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see another miracle performed by Jesus. This time He “walked” upon the sea waters toward His disciples who were travailing in the storm. God Almighty is the Creator and Maker of the earth, and when He manifested Himself through His Son Jesus He was able to transcend all the natural laws which would normally make a person sink. Some have difficulty believing this miracle, however, if “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1) is believed, then all other supernatural occasions are easily obtained. Those who consider this miracle working Jesus as Savior should find themselves believing and trusting in Him for the miracle of “everlasting life”, and let all who read these words accept His offer to be their personal “Savior and Lord” today.
Next time we see Matthew shares how the disciples, “were troubled” when they saw Jesus, “saying, It is a spirit”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
