Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus said, “every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which brings forth out of his treasure things new and old. And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed there”, and in chapter thirteen and verse fifty-four of his book, Matthew wrote how Jesus, “taught them in their synagogue” and the people wondered, “where has this man this wisdom” where we read:
And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Where has this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?
The verse reads, “And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, ...” Matthew began with the words, “and when” which means “and at the time and moment”, “he was come” or “Jesus arose, arrived and appeared” “into his own country” which means “in Jesus' own personal territory and native town”, “he taught them” or “Jesus instructed, held discourse and delivered didactic teachings” “in their synagogue” which means “within their assembly of Jews formally gathered together to offer prayers and listen to the reading and expositions of the scriptures”, “insomuch that” or “then, therefore and wherefore” “they were astonished” which means “the people were struck with amazement and amazed”. Matthew shared how Jesus entered into His home city of Nazareth, began to teach the people there “in their synagogue” and they were “amazed” at His words.
The verse continues, “... and said, Where has this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?” Matthew added the words, “and said” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “where” or “from what place, source, state or cause” “has this man” which refers to “does Jesus holds, owns and possesses” “this wisdom” or “the broad and full intelligence and knowledge of very diverse matters”, “and these mighty works” which means “the strength, power and ability for performing miracles”? Matthew shared how the people wondered where Jesus gained His “broad and full intelligence” and the ability to perform miracles.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how people were “amazed” by Jesus' teachings, and they wondered where He gained His ability to execute miracles. Those who only know of Jesus wonder such thing like these people who were familiar with Him, but did not really have a personal relationship with Him. God sent His Son Jesus to share the “gospel” of the “kingdom of heaven”, and when a person yields their life to Him as “Savior and Lord”, they not only shall be “amazed” at His “wisdom” but shall marvel at His wonderful miracles and abilities.
Next time Matthew shares how the people asked, “is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
