The physician Luke wrote how, “the men which were sent from Cornelius had made inquiry for Simon's house, and stood before the gate, And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there. While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek you. Arise therefore, and get you down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them”, and in chapter ten and verse twenty-one of the book of Acts Luke shared how, “Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius” where we read:
Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius;
and said, Behold, I am he whom you seek: what is the cause wherefore you are come?
The verse begins, “Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius;” Luke began with the words, “then Peter went down” which means “at that time Peter, whose name means a little rock or stone and was one of Jesus' disciples, descended” “to the men which were sent unto him” or “toward the three male human beings who were dispatched and assigned to him, Peter” “from Cornelius” which means “apart from Cornelius whose name means of a horn and was a Roman centurion of the Italian cohort stationed in Caesarea”. Luke shared how “Peter” descended to where the “three men” sent to him by “Cornelius” were waiting.
The verse goes on to say, “and said, Behold, I am he whom you seek: what is the cause wherefore you are come?” Luke continued with the words, “and said” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “Behold, I am he whom you seek” or “lo, look and consider, I, Peter exist as the person for whom you are looking and searching for”: “what is the cause” which means “what is the reason or motive” “wherefore you are come” or “for which you three men have arrived and are present”? Luke shared how “Peter” told the “three men” who came to see him that he was the one for which they were searching, and he asked them their “motive and reason” for seeking him out.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Peter” obeyed the “Holy Spirit”, went down to the “three men”, told them who he was and asked them why they were looking for him. God was at work, and people were fulfilling His mission. God's desire was to spread His gospel through His Son Jesus and those who were followers of Him. We shall see how this whole story relates to God's intentional love toward people, and it reveals His desire to have a personal relationship with everyone through Jesus. Those who are wise will study this story and find God's purpose and plan being fulfilled just the way He desired it to be.
Next time Luke shares how the three men told Peter, “Cornelius … was warned from God by an holy angel to send for you into his house”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
