Hope Deferred - Proverbs 13:12

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathers by labor shall increase”, and in chapter thirteen and verse twelve of Proverbs Solomon said, “hope deferred makes the heart sick” where we read,

Hope deferred makes the heart sick: but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.

The verse begins, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick:” Solomon began with the words, “hope deferred” or “expectation drawn out, lead along, seized and postponed” “makes the heart sick” which means “causes the soul, mind, will, desires, living being, conscience and seat of emotions and affections to become ill, weak, grieved and sorrowful”. Solomon shared how the soul, mind and will of a person becomes grieved and weak whenever their expectations are drawn out and delayed.

The verse continues, “but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.” Solomon added the words, “but when the desires comes” or “however, notwithstanding and moreover at the time and moment the lust, appetite, longing and wish arrives”, “it is a tree of life” which means “the arriving of the longing exists as a wood, timber, stock, plank and stalk of active living”. Solomon referred to the time that the longings of a person are fulfilled and how that time becomes a timber and stock of active living.

When we think through Solomon's words in this verse, we can see how a person who has a delay to their expectation becomes ill and saddened within their soul, however, at the time that longing arrives, there exists a timber and stalk of fresh active living. God knows the best timing for all our passions and desires, and although we may feel sad or ill because what we desire does not come fast enough, in due season we shall have what God wants for us according to His perfect purpose and plan. Over and over Jesus said, “my time is not yet” (See John 2:4; 7:6,8; 8:20; 13:1; 17:1), and because He went to the cross for the sins of all mankind, we have an opportunity to receive Him as our “Savior and Lord”. When we believe and trust in Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us the value of waiting for His perfect time to fulfill our desires.

Next time Solomon says, “whosoever despises the word shall be destroyed”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
