In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat”, and in chapter thirteen and verse five of Proverbs Solomon said, “A righteous man hates lying” where we read,
A righteous man hates lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and comes to shame.
The verse begins, “A righteous man hates lying:” Solomon began with the words, “a righteous man” or “a person whether male or female who is right, just, correct and lawful” “hates lying” which means “abhors, is odious to and is an enemy and foe to speaking falsehood, fraud, deception, disappointment and wrong”. Solomon shared how the person who is just and right abhors speaking untruths and fraudulent words.
The verse goes on to say, “but a wicked man is loathsome, and comes to shame.” Solomon continued with the words, “but a wicked man” or “however, notwithstanding, nonetheless and moreover a person whether male or female who is criminal, guilty of crimes, evil and hostile to God” “is loathsome” which means “stinks, smells bad and becomes odious”, “and comes to shame” or “and enters or comes forth into being ashamed, confounded and embarrassed”. Solomon said a person who is evil and hostile to God smells bad and becomes confounded and embarrassment.
When we meditate upon Solomon's words in this verse, we see how people who are lawful and just abhor speaking untruths and falsehoods, however, a person who is evil and hostile to God not only smells bad, but also becomes ashamed and embarrassed. God wants us to hate what He hates, and He hates “lying”. He wants us to speak the truth. When we lie, we sin, and for that reason and others, God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us the value of speaking the truth in love (See Ephesians 4:15) through His Holy Spirit who will guide us into the truth and away from smelling bad and being ashamed.
Next time Solomon says, “righteousness keeps him that is upright in the way”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
