In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “much food is in the tillage of the poor: but there is that is destroyed for want of judgment”, and in chapter thirteen and verse twenty-four of Proverbs Solomon said, “he that spares his rod hates his son” where we read,
He that spares his rod hates his son: but he that loves him chastens him betimes.
The verse begins, “He that spares his rod hates his son:” Solomon began with the words, “he that spares his rod” or “the person whether male or female who withholds, restrains and keeps in check his, the person's, staff, branch, offshoot, club or scepter” “hates his son” which means “is utterly odious to and as an enemy or foe to his, the person's, child”. Solomon shared how the person who withholds their staff is actually odious to their own child.
The verse continues, “but he that loves him chastens him betimes.” Solomon added the words, “but he that loves him” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the person whether male or female who is affectionate and loving toward him, their child” “chastens him betimes” which means “disciplines, corrects, warns, instructs and rebuke their child early, diligently and earnestly”. Solomon said the person who is affectionate and loving toward their child warns, corrects and disciplines them diligently and earnestly.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how important it is for parents to discipline their children. Solomon went so far as to say the parent who does not do so actually “hates” their child. A “loving” parent guides and corrects their children according to Jehovah God's standards, and they live and act in ways that are pleasing to Him. God loves us, and as our Heavenly Father He gave His Son Jesus to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and discipline and correct us even as “loving” parents care for their children.
Next time Solomon says, “the righteous eats to the satisfying of his soul”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
