In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “the desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil”, and in chapter thirteen and verse twenty of Proverbs Solomon said, “he that walks with wise men shall be wise” where we read,
He that walks with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.
The verse begins, “He that walks with wise men shall be wise:” Solomon began with the words, “he that walks” or “the person whether male or female who makes their way and ambles about” “with wise men” which means “alongside and beside people who are skillful, shrewd, crafty, cunning, subtle and wily” “shall be wise” or “will exist as skillful, shrewd and prudent”. Solomon shared how the person who makes their way with people who are skillful and shrewd will exist as skillful and prudent themselves.
The verse continues, “but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.” Solomon added the words, “but a companion of fools” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover a ruler, shepherd or herdsman belonging to people who are stupid, dullards, arrogant and simpletons” “shall be destroyed” or “will be broken asunder and in pieces”. Solomon said the ruler and shepherd of people who are dullards and simpletons will be broken in pieces.
When we meditate upon Solomon's words in this verse, we discover the benefit to living with people who are skillful and prudent. Skillful people influence those around them, and when their wisdom is perceived and observed, the person with them becomes as they are. God knows there are opportunities to be around people who are “foolish”, and His desire is to remove us from those influences and toward Him. Because He loves us, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us to live among those who are “wise” in His ways and manner of living.
Next time Solomon says, “evil pursues sinners”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
