The Ransom of a Man's Life - Proverbs 13:8

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “There is that makes himself rich, yet has nothing: there is that makes himself poor, yet has great riches”, and in chapter thirteen and verse eight of Proverbs Solomon said, “the ransom of a man's life are his riches” where we read,

The ransom of a man's life are his riches: but the poor hears not rebuke.

The verse begins, “The ransom of a man's life are his riches:” Solomon began with the word, “the ransom” or “the price, village or redemption” “of a man's life” which means “belonging to a person whether male or female's active and lively living” “are his riches” or “exists as his, the person's, wealth”. Solomon shared how the redemptive price of a person's active living exists wtihin their wealth.

The verse continues, “but the poor hears not rebuke.” Solomon added the words, “but the poor” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the person who lacks, hungers, exists as impoverished and in want” “hears not rebuke” which means “does not listen, adhere, perceive or obey chiding or reproof”. Solomon said people who are lacking and in want do not listen to or obey reproof.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how there is a difference in the ability of a wealthy person to respond to threats verses an impoverished one. The wealthy person has the means to pay a “ransom”, but the “poor” person is unable to fend for themselves. God paid the ultimate price for us when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins, and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us the value of His “wealth” that is able to redeem our souls.

Next time Solomon says, “the light of the righteous rejoices”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
