Bochim - Judges 2:5

In the book of Judges we learned about Israel how, “an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I swore unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you. And you shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; you shall throw down their altars: but you have not obeyed my voice: why have you done this? Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you. And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spoke these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept”, and in chapter two and verse five of Judges, we learn how, “they called the name of that place Bochim”, where we read,

And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the LORD.

The verse reads, “And they called the name of that place Bochim:” The writer began with the words, “and they called the name of that place” which means “and they, the people of Israel, named the location” “Bochim” whose name means “weeping” and was “a place near Gilgal (or Bethel).” The writer shared how the people of Israel named the location “Bochin” or weeping because they cried aloud.

The verse goes on to say, “and they sacrificed there unto the LORD.” The writer continued with the words, “and they sacrificed there” which means “and they, the people of Israel, slaughtered and slayed animals there, in Bochim” “unto the LORD” or “to Jehovah whose name means the existing One and is the proper name for the One True God”. The writer shared how the people of Israel worshiped Jehovah God by slaughtering animals to Him.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how the people of Israel were so affected by the words the angel of the LORD, Jehovah God, that they named the location where He spoke “weeping” and offered animal “sacrifices” to worship Him there. Consequences for disobedience to God affects everyone who sins, and this is not the way God wants it to be. He warns, instructs, guides and helps us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. When we submit to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and to help us keep from suffering difficult consequences for disobeying Him.
