In the book of Judges we learned when the angel of the LORD questioned the people of Israel about not expelling the pagans in the promise land, He said, “I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you. And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spoke these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept. And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the LORD”, and in chapter two and verse six of Judges, we learn what happened, “when Joshua had let the people go”, where we read,
And when Joshua had let the people go,
the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.
The verse reads, “And when Joshua had let the people go, …” The writer began with the words, “and when Joshua” which means “and at the time and moment Joshua or Jehoshua whose name means ‘Jehovah is salvation’ and was the son of Nun of the tribe of Ephraim and successor to Moses as the leader of the children of Israel; led the conquest of Canaan” “had let the people go” or “had dismissed, set free and loose the human beings of Israel” the following occurred. The writer shared how the following occurred at the time “Joshua” dismissed the people of Israel.
The verse continues, “… the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.” The writer added the words, “the children of Israel” which means “the offspring and progeny belonging to Israel whose name means ‘God prevails’ and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob” “went every man unto his inheritance” or “left and departed each, the whole and all of the people both male and female to his, the person’s, share, portion and heritage” “to possess the land” which means “to seize, dispossess, inherited and occupied the territory, region, district and country”. The writer shared how the offspring belonging to “Israel” departed to their shares and portions of the territory.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how “Joshua” allowed the people to depart, and all of the offspring belonging to “Israel” went to their territories in the promise land. Jehovah God made His declaration. The people of Israel responded in despair and after weeping and making “sacrifices” to Jehovah God, they were sent back to their territories. In like manner, God desires a personal intimate relationship with us through His Son Jesus who came into the world to be crucified on the cross and to be raised from the dead after three days. When we yield to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and to help us live in a manner that is in alignment with Him and His ways wherever we are in the world.
