Brought Out of Prison - Acts 16:39

The beloved physician Luke wrote after Paul and Silas were thrown into prison and experienced an earthquake, the sergeants came to them and said, “The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace. But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out secretly? no verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out. And the sergeants told these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans”, and in chapter sixteen and verse thirty-nine of the book of Acts Luke shared how the magistrates, “came and besought them, and brought them out” where we read:

And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city.

The verse begins,And they came and besought them, and brought them out, ... Luke began with the words, “and they came” which means “and the magistrates arose and appeared” “and besought them” or “and came alongside, summoned, addressed Paul and Silas”, “and brought them out” which means “and lead Paul and Silas out of the prison”. Luke shared how the “magistrates” went to “Paul and Silas” and lead them out of the prison.

The verse continues, “... and desired them to depart out of the city.” Luke added the words, “and desired them to depart out” or “and wanted, requested, beseeched and asked Paul and Silas to leave and go forth” “of the city” which means “from the habitation, abode, dwelling place and municipal of Philippi”. Luke shared how the “magistrates” wanted “Paul and Silas” to leave their “city”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the “commanders and leaders” in Philippi came to where “Paul and Silas” were in prison and set them free. Afterward, they wanted them to leave “Philippi”. These “magistrates” were in violation to “Roman law” because they had “Paul and Silas” beaten and thrown in “jail” without first having a trial for them. They complied with “Paul's” request straightaway and released him and “Silas” from the “prison” and asked them to depart. God loves people, and even when they err in judgment, He continues to be willing to “save” them from the penalty of sin when they surrender themselves to Him. Let all who read these words yield to Jesus knew how to direct “Paul and Silas” and knows how to lead everyone who submits themselves to Him.

Next time Luke shares how Paul and Silas, “went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
