Taking Security of Jason - Acts 17:9

The beloved physician Luke shared when Paul, Silas, Timothy and Luke himself shared the gospel of Jesus Christ with the people in Thessalonica, “some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few. But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come here also. Whom Jason has received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus. And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things”, and in chapter seventeen and verse nine of the book of Acts Luke shared what happened, “when they had taken security of Jason” where we read:

And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.

The verse begins, “And when they had taken security of Jason, ... Luke began with the words, “and when they had taken security” which means “and at the time and moment the magistrates, commanders and leaders received competent, ample and sufficient money” “of Jason” or “from Jason whose name means one who will heal and was a Thessalonian who entertained Paul and Silas, and maybe a cousin of Paul” the following occurred. Luke shared how the leaders of the city of Thessalonica received “a posted bond” from “Jason” and did the following.

The verse continues, “... and of the other, they let them go.” Luke added the words, “and of the other” or “and from the other believers and brothers in Christ”, “they let them go” which means “the leaders, commanders and magistrates released and set Jason and the brethren free”. Luke shared how the “other believers” with “Jason” also posted a bond and the leaders released them as well.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the “leaders in Thessalonica” made “Jason and the other believers” pay a bond, and afterward they set them free. The plan of God for the salvation of people within the city of Thessalonica was at hand, and even though “Jason and the other believers” were accosted for believing in Jesus, they continued their faith in Him. God desires to forgive the sins of every person who will yield to His Son Jesus, and when they submit to Him, they receive the promise of everlasting life. Those who study the story of the gospel coming to “Thessalonica” should learn that Jesus came to die for their sins as well and yield themselves to Him.

Next time Luke shares, “the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
