Knowing the Cause - Acts 23:28

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Claudius Lysias, “wrote a letter after this manner” concerning Paul that apostle, “Claudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix sends greeting. This man was taken of the Jews, and should have been killed of them: then came I with an army, and rescued him, having understood that he was a Roman”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse twenty-eight of the book of Acts Luke shared what Claudus Lysias did when he,would have known the cause wherefore they accusedPaul where we read:

And when I would have known the cause wherefore they accused him,

I brought him forth into their council:

The verse begins, “And when I would have known the cause wherefore they accused him, ... Luke began with the word, “and when” which means “and at the time and moment” “I would have known the cause” or “I, Claudius Lysias, purposed, desired and was deliberately willing and affectionate to perceive, understand and come to the knowledge of the reason, accusation and charge of crime” “wherefore they accused him” which means “then, therefore, consequently and on what account the Jewish people came forward against, impleaded and charged Paul”. Luke shared how “Claudius Lysias” wanted “Felix the governor” to know how he desired to know the reason the Jewish people were bringing causes against Paul, so he did the following.

The verse continues, “... I brought him forth into their council:” Luke added the words, “I brought him forth” which means “I, Claudius Lysias, carried and led Paul” “into their council” or “toward the Jewish people's Sanhedrin in Jerusalem”. Luke shared how “Claudius Lysias” informed “Felix the governor” that he took “Paul” to the “Sanhedrin” who were bringing charges against him.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Claudius Lysias the chief captain” was insuring that “Felix the governor” was thoroughly aware of why he was sending “Paul” to him. There needed to be a “just cause” for having a Roman military escort to bring “Paul” to “Felix”, and since “Paul” was a Roman without true charges against him, “Claudius Lysias” was making sure “Felix” was aware of the reason all this was happening. God knew why all these things were occurring, and His purpose was to have “Paul” go to Rome so the world would know about His “salvation” plan for mankind. God loves people, and He wants everyone to have an opportunity to receive His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Those who yield to Him will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life, and all who consider these things should “come to Jesus” and allow Him to direct the steps of their lives.

Next time Luke shares Claudius Lysias says concerning Paul, “I perceived to be accused of questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
