Deferring Anger - Proverbs 19:11

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “delight is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes”, and in chapter nineteen and verse eleven of Proverbs Solomon said, “the discretion of a man defers his anger” where we read,

The discretion of a man defers his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

The verse begins, The discretion of a man defers his anger;” Solomon began with the words, “the discretion of a man” or “the prudence, insight, understanding and wisdom belonging to a person whether male or female” “defers his anger” which means “prolongs, makes long, continues and draws out their wrath which wrinkles the nostrils and nose”. Solomon shared how wisdom and prudence prolongs and delays the wrath of a person.

The verse continues, “and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.” Solomon added the words, “and it is his glory” or “ and it is the beauty, splendor, honor and majesty of the person” “to pass over” which means “to traverse and cross” “a transgression” or “a revolt, sin, trespass or rebellion”. Solomon said it becomes a person's virtue and respect to overlook an offense or trespass.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how insight and understanding of a person causes them to delay their wrath, and when a trespass or sin is committed, they consider it their honor to overlook it. God wants us to be like Him, and He is “slow to anger” and willing to forgive sins and grant everlasting life to every person who yields to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we surrender to Him, He will grant us His Holy Spirit to help us delay our wrath and be willing to extend grace to those who commit trespasses.

Next time Solomon says, “the king's wrath is as the roaring of a lion”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
