In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “house and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the LORD”, and in chapter nineteen and verse fifteen of Proverbs Solomon said, “slothfulness casts into a deep sleep” where we read,
Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.
The verse begins, “Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep;” Solomon began with the word, “slothfulness” or “laziness and insolence” “casts into a deep sleep” which means “falls, prostrates, settles, is apportioned and assigned lethargy or a trance”. Solomon shared how laziness causes a person to fall into a lethargic mental state.
The verse continues, “and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.” Solomon added the words, “and an idle soul” or “and a lax, slack and treacherous heart, mind, will, desire, living being, conscience and seat of emotions and affections” “shall suffer hunger” which means “will be voracious, famished and rapacious”. Solomon said the slack and treacherous heart, mind and soul of a person will be ravening and famished.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how being lazy causes a person to be lethargic and apathetic, and the heart, mind and will of a person who is slack will become famished. God wants us to work, and we are not to be “idle”. When we realize the commitment Jehovah God made for us when He sent His Son Jesus to be crucified on the cross for our sins, and when we receive His forgiveness of sins and granting of everlasting life, we should be inspired to diligently work in His Kingdom and never be lax in our “souls”.
Next time Solomon says, “he that keeps the commandment keeps his own soul”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
