Keep the Commandments and Your Soul - Proverbs 19:16

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “slothfulness casts into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger”, and in chapter nineteen and verse sixteen of Proverbs Solomon said, “he that keeps the commandment keeps his own soul” where we read,

He that keeps the commandment keeps his own soul; but he that despises his ways shall die.

The verse begins, He that keeps the commandment keeps his own soul;” Solomon began with the words, “he that keeps the commandment” or “the person whether male or female who watches over, guards, observes, gives heed to and protects the ordinance, precept and law” “keeps his own soul” which means “watches over, guards, observes, gives heed to and protects the person's own personal heart, mind, will, desires, living being, conscience and seat of emotions and affections”. Solomon shared how the person who observes the ordinances of God watches over their own heart, mind and will.

The verse goes on to say,but he that despises his ways shall die.” Solomon continued with the words, “but he that despises his way” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the person whether male or female who regards with contempt and disdains the person's traveled road, path, direction and journey” “shall die” which means “will cease to live, be put to death or executed”. Solomon said the direction and path of the person who disdains the ordinances of God will cease to live.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how the person who observes the laws and ordinances of Jehovah God watches over their own personal heart, mind and will, however, the the journey of the person who regards with contempt the ordinances of God will be put to death and cease to live. God wants us to obey His “commandments” because they are meant to protect us and give us a good life, however, should we reject and refuse to obey Him, we hurt our own hearts, minds and will. God loves us, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to follow His commands as we never despise His discipline that leads to life on earth and eternal life in Heaven with Him.

Next time Solomon says, “he that has pity upon the poor lends to the LORD”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
