Servants Upon Horses - Ecclesiastes 10:7

In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon said, “folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place”, and in chapter ten and verse seven of his book Solomon said, “I have seen servants upon horses” where we read,

I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.

The verse reads, “I have seen servants upon horses, …” Solomon began with the words, “I have seen” or “I, Solomon, have noticed, discerned, distinguished and observed” “servants upon horses” which means “slaves, subjects and bondmen on swallows, swifts and rapid horses”. Solomon said he observed bondmen riding upon swallows and rapid horses.

The verse goes on to say, “… and princes walking as servants upon the earth.” Solomon continued with the words, “and princes” or “and rulers, leaders, chiefs, chieftains, officials and nobles” “walking as servants” which means “ambling, departing, proceeding and traversing similar and in likeness to slaves, subjects and bondmen” “upon the earth” or “on the land, territory, country, region and ground”. Solomon noticed rulers and leaders who were ambling about similar to bondmen on the land and ground.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn that Solomon observed people who were in positions that were opposite of their normal places and abilities. Usually “princes” or rulers of authority rode on horses and servants walked, but Solomon saw these positions reversed. The idea was that each of them were out of place, and their roles were reversed in a foolish manner. The Ultimate Ruler and Almighty God desires to have a personal intimate relationship with all of us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to lead and guide us according to His purpose and will regardless of our positions and stations within this life.

Next time Solomon says, “He that digs a pit shall fall into it”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
