An
“angel”
from heaven showed John the apostle many things which will occur in
the tribulation time on the earth, and John wrote,
“And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven,
having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. And
he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is
fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the
hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful
bird. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her
fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication
with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the
abundance of her delicacies. And I heard another voice from heaven,
saying, Come out of her, my people, that you be not partakers of her
sins, and that you receive not of her plagues. Reward her even as she
rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in
the cup which she has filled fill to her double. How much she has
glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow
give her: for she says in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow,
and shall see no sorrow.”
In chapter eighteen and verse eight of the “voice
from heaven”
declared, “therefore
shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning and famine”
where
we read:
Therefore
shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine;
and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is
the Lord God who judges her.
The
verse reads, “Therefore
shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine;”
John began with the word, “therefore”
which means “wherefore and with this” “shall
her plagues”
or “will Babylon's blows, stripes, wounds and heavy affliction”
“come
in one day”
which means “arrive and arise in one single interval between
sunrise and sunset”, “death”
or “separation of the soul and the body by which the life on earth
is ended”,
“and mourning”
which means “grief and sorrow” “and
famine”
or “scarcity of harvest or dearth”. John was told that “in one
day's time period” “Babylon”
was to receive “death,
grief, sorrow and dearth”.
The
verse continues, “and
she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is
the Lord God who judges her.”
John continued with the words, “and
she shall be utterly burned”
which means “and Babylon burnt up and consumed wholly” “with
fire” or
“with fiery lightning”: “for
strong” or
“because and since mighty, capable, forcible, firm and sure”
“is the Lord”
which means “is the one in whom a person or thing belongs and about
which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the
Messiah” “God”
which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised
of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”
“who judges her” which
means “puts asunder, resolves, decrees, rules and governs Babylon”.
The “voice
from heaven”
told John that “Babylon”
will be “utterly consumed with fire” because God is “mighty”
and has “judged”
her.
When
we think through John's words in this verse, we see how “commercial
Babylon” shall surely be “judged” in “one day's” time.
“Babylon” will be “wholly consumed” by “fire”
from God because God is more powerful than any other entity physical
or spiritual. This Almighty God desires to have a relationship with
every person through His Son Jesus Christ, and should a person rely
upon anything other than Him, they shall certainly face “judgment”
even as “Babylon”. May all who read these words take heed
to this warning, and yield their lives to Jesus Christ before the
“fires” of God fall.
Next
time
the “voice
from heaven”
shares with John concerning, “the
kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived
deliciously with her”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
