Matthew the apostle shared how Jesus told His disciples, “ Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be you therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” Jesus continued, “But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues. And you shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles”, and in chapter ten and verse nineteen of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples, “take no thought how or what you shall speak” where we read:
But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what you shall speak:
for it shall be given you in that same hour what you shall speak.
The verse reads, “But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what you shall speak: ...” Matthew began with the word, “but when” which means “moreover and in that time and moment” “they deliver you up or “these people will betray, commit and commend the disciples over to the authorities”, “take no thought” or “do not be anxious, trouble, worried or seeking to promote you own interest” “how or what” which means “in which way” “you shall speak” or “the disciples should utter, declare, proclaim, preach or talk”. Matthew shared how Jesus gave His “apostles” advise to not worry concerning the things they are to says when they are “delivered” over to “governors and kings”
The verse continues, “... for it shall be given you in that same hour what you shall speak.” Matthew continued with the words, “for” which means “because, since and on account that” “it shall be given you” or “how and what to say will be granted, supplied, furnished and delivered to the disciples” “in that same hour” which means “within the very time and moment” “what you shall speak” or “the disciples set about to utter, declare, proclaim, preach or talk”. Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples they would know what to “say” when the time came to declare it.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus comforted and assured His disciples concerning what to say before ruling authorities. Jesus knew in advance that His “apostles” would encounter times when they would be brought before authorities for their faith and trust in Him, and they would have to give an explanation or defense for themselves in most cases. At that time, they might be intimidated and not know what to say or when to say it, but Jesus assured them they would know at the very moment they needed to share. God desires this kind of trust and faith in Him and His Son Jesus. God supplies in the time of need, and though men may coerce or intimidate them, Jesus insures His believers they shall know what to say when called upon.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus told His disciples how it would be, “the Spirit of your Father which speaks in you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
