Matthew the apostle shared how Jesus told His disciples, “fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell”, and in chapter ten and verse twenty-nine of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples not one sparrow falls, “on the ground without your Father” where we read:
Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing?
and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.
The verse reads, “Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing?” Matthew began with Jesus' question, “are not two sparrows” which means “isn't it true that two little birds like little sparrow are” “sold” or “bartered as from a peddler” “for a farthing” or “for the assarium or assarius which is the name of a coin equal to the tenth part of a drachma, a farthing or about one quarter cent”? Matthew shared how Jesus asked His disciples about the “worth” of two small birds which He attributed to be worth about one quarter of a cent.
The verse goes on to say, “and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.” Matthew continued with the words, “and one of them” which means “and a certain single one of the sparrows” “shall not fall” or “will not descend from a higher place to a lower, be thrust down or perish” “on the ground” which means “upon the arable land, country, territory or region” “without your Father” or “not having the intervention of the disciple's Heavenly generator, Creator or originator”. Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples there was not one single “sparrow” that “perishes” without God the Father's knowledge.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus desired to assure His “apostles” of God's constant presence with them. Though they would encounter people who would be opposed to them, there would never be a time when they would be outside of God's sight. God loves people, and He desires to be in a relationship with them through His Son Jesus. He knows when they are under attack and persecution, and even as His eye is on the sparrow that falls, those who have yielded their lives to Him by receiving His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” need never to wonder if He is watching over them.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus told His disciples, “the very hairs of you head are all numbered”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
