Matthew shared how the people of the city where the demon possessed men were delivered by Jesus both “met” Jesus and “asked him to leave their coasts”, and afterward, “he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city. And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; your sins be forgiven you. And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemes. And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think you evil in your hearts? For whether is easier, to say, Your sins be forgiven you; or to say, Arise, and walk? But that you may know that the Son of man has power on earth to forgive sins, (then said he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up your bed, and go unto your house.” In chapter nine and verse seven of his book, Matthew shared how the man who was “sick of the palsy”, “arose, and departed to his house” where we read:
And he arose, and departed to his house.
The verse reads, “And he arose, ...” Matthew began with the words, “and he arose” or “the man who was sick of the palsy rose up, aroused and erected himself”. Matthew shared how the man got up from his bed.
The verse continues, “... and departed to his house.” Matthew added the words, “and departed” or “and left and went away” “to his house” which means “to the man's own dwelling place, abode and habitation”. Matthew shared how the man “sick with the palsy” obeyed Jesus and left from where he was and went to his own house.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see the power of Jesus' word to heal the sick. Not only did Jesus forgive this man's sin, but He also healed his body. The God of the universe is more than capable to “heal” sicknesses, and His desire is to “forgive” the “sins” of every person who will repent of them, turn their lives over to His Son Jesus Christ, and begin to follow Him as “Savior and Lord”. The question becomes, “will those reading these words “arise” and follow Him and His instructions wherever they may lead?
Next time Matthew shares how, “the multitudes saw it, and they marveled”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
