Matthew the apostle shared when Jesus raised the little girl back to life again, “the fame hereof went abroad into all that land. And when Jesus departed there, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, You Son of David, have mercy on us. And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus said unto them, Do you believe that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yes, Lord. Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straightly charged them, saying, See that no man know it. But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country. As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil. And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marveled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel. But the Pharisees said, He casts out devils through the prince of the devils.” In chapter nine and verse thirty-five of his book, Matthew shared how “Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching...and preaching” where we read:
And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.
The verse reads, “And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, ...” Matthew began with the words, “and Jesus” or “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “went about” which means “walked about, around and compassed” “all the cities” or “each, every, the whole and everyone of the abodes, towns and habitations” “and villages” or “the common sleeping places to which laborers in the field return or hamlets”, “teaching” which means “holding discourse with others in order to instruct them and to deliver didactic discourses” “in their synagogues” or “in their gathering places and assemblies where they offered prayers and listened to the reading and exposition of the scriptures”, “and preaching” which means “heralding, proclaiming and publishing openly” “the gospel” or “the good news and glad tidings of the kingdom of God soon to be set up and subsequently also of Jesus the Messiah who is the founder” “of the kingdom” which refers to “the royal power, kingship, dominion and rule”. Matthew shared how Jesus continued to “teach” and “preach” the “good news” of God's Kingdom in both the “synagogues” or public worship assemblies and in their towns and habitations.
The verse goes on to say, “... and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.” Matthew continued with the words, “and healing” or “and serving, curing and restoring to health” “every sickness” which means “each, all, the whole and everyone of the diseases, maladies and infirmities” “and every disease” or “and each, all, the whole and everyone of the debilities, bodily weaknesses and infirmities” “among the people” which means “that were with the people groups and crowds”. Matthew shared how in addition to “teaching and preaching” the gospel of the Kingdom, Jesus also “cured” diseases and “restored to health” those who were afflicted in their bodies.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see the power of Jesus' word and His power over “physical” maladies. People around Him needed both “spiritual” and “physical” healing, and Jesus provided both. God desires for people everywhere to be in a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and those who observe His life through Matthew's words shall know the compassion He had for all people who surrounded Him. May all who read these words yield their lives to Jesus Christ who demonstrates over and over again that He is indeed the Messiah and the One who came to “save” all people from theirs sins.
Next time Matthew shares when Jesus, “saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
