Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus said, “When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walks through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. Then he says, I will return into my house from where I came out; and when he is come, he finds it empty, swept, and garnished”, and in chapter twelve and verse forty-five of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus said the “unclean spirit”, “goes … and takes with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself” where we read:
Then goes he, and takes with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.
The verse reads, “Then goes he, and takes with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there:” Matthew began with the word, “then” which means “at that time and moment” “goes he” or “the unclean spirit pursues, carries over and continues on”, “and takes with himself” which means “and carries and brings along with the unclean spirit himself” “seven other spirits” or “seven more unclean spirits or demons” “more wicked” or “greater in evil” “than himself” which means “than the unclean spirit himself”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the “unclean spirit” that was “cast out” returns to his original dwelling place and brings with him seven more “unclean spirits” who are more “evil” than the original one.
The verse goes on to say, “and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.” Matthew continued with the words, “and the last state” which means “the extreme, final, lowest and latter end” “of that man” or “of the person from whom the unclean spirit was cast out” “is worse” which means “is more evil or aggravated and sorer” “than the first” or “than the principle and chief state of the person”. “Even so shall it be also” which means “in this manner, likewise and thus indeed will it exist” “unto this wicked” or “toward this evil, unclean, diseased and bad” “generation” which refers to “the group of people who are verymuch like each other in endowments, pursuits, character or ranks of natural descent and the successive members of a genealogy”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the person has the “unclean spirits” return to them will discover themselves in a much “more evil and aggravated” state.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how important it is for a person to receive the Holy Spirit of God. When people receive Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, the Holy Spirit enters them and they are safeguarded against any demon possession. However, if an “evil spirit” is cast out of a person and they do not receive Jesus Christ as their “Savior and Lord”, they are like a “house that is empty, swept and garnished” an opened to be entered again by “unclean spirits”. God desires to have a loving protective relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and those who are wise shall accept His invitation to accept Jesus and allow Him to keep them safe and protected from all “evil” and “wickedness”.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus', “mother and brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
