Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus went, “out of the house, and sat by the sea side, and in chapter thirteen and verse two of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus went, “into a ship, and sat” where we read:
And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat;
and the whole multitude stood on the shore.
The verse reads, “And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat;” Matthew began with the words, “and great multitudes” which means “and large and massive crowds” “were gathered together” or “were assembled and collected together” “unto him” which means “to Jesus”, “so that he” or “so Jesus” “went into a ship” which means “walked and stepped into a boat or sailing vessel” “and sat” or “and was seated”. Matthew shared when Jesus saw the crowd surrounding Him, He “stepped into” a boat and “sat” down.
The verse continues, “and the whole multitude stood on the shore.” Matthew added the words, “and the whole multitude” which means “and each, every, all and everyone within the crowd” “stood” or “were standing” “on the shore” which refers to “upon the seashore”. Matthew shared how Jesus “sat” in the boat while the crowd stood upon the seashore.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus removed Himself from the crowd so that He might be able to teach them. His venue became a boat that was just offshore from where He was previously seated, and this gave Him a vantage point where He could teach the people. God the Heavenly Father sent His Son Jesus to show His love and care for people, and when He had opportunity to teach them about Himself, Jesus looked upon the crowd and put Himself in a position where they might hear Him. Jesus considers the individual in this manner also, and when a person yields their life to Him, they find that He has put Himself in the best position to give instruction to them for all of eternity.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus spoke, “many things unto them in parables” as He referenced a “sower”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
