Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus, “went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side. And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away, and in chapter thirteen and verse seven of his book, Matthew wrote how Jesus said some seed, “fell among thorns” where we read:
And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:
The verse reads, “And some fell among thorns;” Matthew began with the words, “and some” which means “moreover and others” “fell” or “descended and lighted” “among thorns” which refers to “on and in position with bramble bushes, briers and thorny plant”. Matthew wrote how Jesus next referred to “seeds” which were cast into “thorny” places.
The verse goes on to say, “and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:” Matthew continued with the words, “and the thorns” which means “and the bramble bushes, briers and thorny plants” “sprung up” or “germinated and started out of the ground”, “and choked them” which means “and suffocated, drowned and stifled the seeds sown among thorns”. Matthew shared how Jesus referred to the choking of the “seeds” that were cast into the “briers and bramble bushes”.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how an environment of “thorns” was not good for the growth of the “seeds”. Thorny bushes tend to grow around good plants and cut off their nutrition for growth. God desires for people not only to know Him but also to grow in their relationship with Him. Many times other things enter a person's life that “chokes” out their individual intimacy with God, and the fruit of their lives bears witness to it. May all who read these words understand the implications of the “thorns” within their lives and seek to remove them before they are unable to produce any fruit pleasing to the Heavenly Father.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus told the people some seed, “fell into good ground”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
