Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus, “went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side. And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them. But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold”, and in chapter thirteen and verse nine of his book, Matthew wrote how Jesus sent a message to anyone, “who has ears to hear” where we read:
Who has ears to hear, let him hear.
The verse reads, “Who has ears to hear, ...” Matthew began with the word, “who” which means “the person whether male or female that” “has ears” or “holds, owns or possesses the faculty of perceiving with the mind, understanding and knowing” “to hear” which means “to perceive, learn, comprehend and understand”. Matthew shared how Jesus appealed to people who had the ability to perceive, comprehend and understand.
The verse continues, “... let him hear.” Matthew added the word, “let him” which means “allow and permit that person” “hear” or “attend to, consider, understand and perceive”. Matthew shared how Jesus called upon people who had the capacity to perceive and understand what He was saying to do so.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus desired for people to understand and perceive what He was saying even though He knew they would not. God desires for every person to have a loving relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they receive Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they shall “hear”, learn and understand more and more of the principles of the Kingdom of God. Let all who read these words yield their lives to Jesus Christ who is indeed the Messiah and “Savior” of the world.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus' disciples ask Him, “why do you speak to them in parables”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
