Matthew the apostle wrote when Jesus healed the man with the “withered hand”, “the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him. But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from there: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all; And charged them that they should not make him known: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying, Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall show judgment to the Gentiles”, and in chapter twelve and verse nineteen of his book, Matthew shared Isaiah's prophecy, “He shall not strive … cry … neither shall any man hear his voice” where we read:
He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.
The verse reads, “He shall not strive, nor cry;” Matthew began with the words, “he shall not strive” which means “the Messiah will not wrangle or engage in strife”, “nor cry” or “and not shout, clamor or cry aloud”. Matthew shared how Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah will not be one “wrangle, engage in strife or shout out loud”.
The verse goes on to say, “neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.” Matthew continued with the word, “neither” which means “nor and in no way” “shall any man” or “will any certain one” “hear” which means “be endowed with the faculty of hearing, not deaf, attend to, understand or perceive” “his voice” or “the Messiah's sound or tone” “in the streets” which means “on a wide plat, place or broad street”. Matthew shared how Isaiah said people within the “streets” would not “understand or perceive” the Messiah's “voice”.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus fulfilled Isaiah's prophesy. Though Jesus was among the people, many did not understand or perceive His reason for being with them. The Pharisees were among those who did not know why Jesus came, and their desire was to destroy Him. God wants to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, but sadly, many people do not know Him and they are far from understanding that He wants to be their “Savior and Lord”. Those who are wise will ask themselves whether they know this “Savior”, and if they do not, let today be the day of “salvation”.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus refers to, “a bruised reed … and smoking flax”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
