Matthew the apostle wrote how, “great multitudes followed” Jesus “and he healed them all; And charged them that they should not make him known: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying, Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall show judgment to the Gentiles. He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory. And in his name shall the Gentiles trust”, and in chapter twelve and verse twenty-two of his book, Matthew wrote, “then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil” where we read:
Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb:
and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.
The verse reads, “Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb:” Matthew began with the word, “then” which means “at that time and moment” “was brought” or “was lead and presented” “unto him” which refers to “Jesus” “one possessed with a devil” which means “a person who was under the power of a demon”, “blind” or “one visually impaired such as with opaque or smokey vision” “and dumb” which means “blunted or lame in tongue or speechless”. Matthew shared how the people brought a man to Jesus who was “blind and dumb” because he was possessed by a “demon”.
The verse continues, “and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spoke and saw.” Matthew added the words, “and he” which means “and Jesus” “healed him” or “cured, healed and restored to health the blind and deaf demon possessed man”, “insomuch that” or “wherefore and therefore as a result” “the blind” or “one visually impaired such as opaque or smokey vision” “and dumb” which means “blunted or lame in tongue or speechless” “both spoke” or “even also and indeed uttered a voice and emitted a sound” “and saw” which means “and discerned with sight and perceived by seeing”. Matthew shared how Jesus “cured and restored to health” the man who was both “blind and dumb”.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see another demonstration of Jesus' power over both spiritual and physical things. This man was “blind and dumb” because a “demon” possessed Him, and at the moment Jesus set the man free from the “demon's” hold, he could speak and see. God loves people, and His power is greater than any physical or spiritual foe that comes against them. He desires to have a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they submit their lives to Him and recognize His sacrificial death upon the cross for their sins, He brings about healing to the “soul” that provides “vision and speech” that no one else can give.
Next time Matthew shares how there, “and the people were amazed”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
