Matthew the apostle shared how Jesus said, “Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest”, and in chapter eleven and verse twenty-nine of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus told the people to, “take my yoke upon you, and learn of me” where we read:
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart:
and you shall find rest unto your souls.
The verse reads, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart:” Matthew began with the word, “take” which means “raise up, elevate and lift up” “my yoke” which refers to “Jesus' balance, pair of scales and wooden device which is put on draught cattle” “upon you” or “on the people to whom Jesus is speaking”, “and learn” which means “be apprised, increase in knowledge, hear and be informed” “of me” or “by Jesus”, “for” or “because, since and on account that” “I am meek” which means “Jesus is gentle, mild and humble” “and lowly” or “of low degree, humble and base” “in heart” which refers to “in soul or mind as it is the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes and endeavors”. Matthew shared how Jesus told the people around Him to “lift up and put on” His “connecting device” and “be informed about Him” because He is “gentle and humble” in His soul.
The verse continues, “and you shall find rest unto your souls. ” Matthew added the words, “and you” which means “and the people to whom Jesus was speaking” “shall find” or “will learn, discover, get knowledge of and come to know” “rest” which means “intermission, cessation of any motion, recreation, business or labor” “unto your souls” or “toward your seat of the feelings, desires, affections and aversions”. Matthew shared how Jesus promised that people who “learn of” Him will discover “recreation” within their “minds and hearts”.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus desires to have people “increase in their knowledge” of Him. Those who do will discover that He provides them with “peace” in their troubles and difficulties. God desires to have a loving relationship with every person, and when they “yoke” themselves to Jesus and “learn” of His ways, they shall find “rest” in their lives. Let all who read these words come Jesus who is the “Prince of Peace”, and may they find comfort for their troubled minds.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus says, “ my yoke is easy”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
