Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus, “went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side. And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them”, and in chapter thirteen and verse eight of his book, Matthew wrote how Jesus said some seed, “fell into good ground” where we read:
But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit,
some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.
The verse reads, “But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, ...” Matthew began with the word, “but” which means “nevertheless, moreover and” “other fell” or “some other seed descended and was scattered” “into good ground” which refers to “in beautiful, excellent, choice, surpassing and magnificent arable land, earth and soil”, “and brought forth” or “and produced, supplied and furnished” “fruit” which means “results, works, deeds, progeny and posterity”. Matthew shared how Jesus said some of the “seeds” “fell” into “good soil” which caused them to produce “fruit”.
The verse continues, “... some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.” Matthew added the word, “some” which means “a number of the seeds produced” “an hundredfold” or “one hundred times as many as they were”, “some sixtyfold” which means “a number of the seeds produced sixty times as many as they were”, “some thirtyfold” or “and a number of the seeds produced thirty times as many as they were”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the “seeds” sown in “good soil” produced either one hundred, sixty or thirty times as many as they were.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how the seeds sown into the “good” soil produced multiple times as many as they originally were. When a “seed” such as a corn “seed” is sown into “good soil”, it produces “corn stalks” that have multiple ears of corn on them. Each of those ears have multiple grains of corn within them, and we easily understand how the “seeds” Jesus spoke of are reproduced in great quantity. God desires for people to have “fruitful” lives as they relate to Him through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him as “Savior and Lord”, they have begun to be a “fruitful” “seed” by which all the world may be greatly blessed.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus refers to, “who has ears to hear”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
