People Amazed at the Son of David - Matthew 12:23

Matthew the apostle wrote how there was brought to Jesus, one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw”, and in chapter twelve and verse twenty-three of his book, Matthew shared how, “all the people were amazed” where we read:

And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?

The verse reads, And all the people were amazed, ...” Matthew began with the words, “and all the people” which means “and each, every, the whole and everyone of the human beings whether male or female” “were amazed” or “astounded, thrown into wonderment and displaced in their minds”. Matthew shared how “everyone of the people” surrounding Jesus were “astounded” at His ability to heal the man who was “blind, deaf and demon possessed”.

The verse goes on to say, ... and said, Is not this the son of David? Matthew continued with the words, “and said” which means “and uttered, proclaimed, declared and questioned”, “is not this the son” or “isn't this the offspring, posterity and descendant” “of David” which means “belonging to King David whose name means beloved and was the second king of Israel”?. Matthew shared how the crowd of people questioned whether Jesus was simply the “posterity” of “David the King of Israel”.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how the people surrounding Jesus were “amazed” at Jesus' power and ability to rule over “demons”, “blindness” and “deafness”. They thought Jesus was just a “man” because He came from the lineage of “King David”, but they had never seen any “man” do the things Jesus did. Jesus was “God incarnate” upon the earth, and there was and is no power that is greater than He. When this “demon” took over the man's life, God easily cast Him out, and the man could “see and speak”. God loves people, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with every one of them through His Son Jesus. Jesus died on the cross to pay for the sins of the whole world, and those who consider this One who is greater than all should submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” and receive the “everlasting life” He promises.

Next time Matthew shares how the Pharisees said, “this fellow does not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
