Luke the physician wrote how the apostles were healing people and sharing the gospel throughout Jerusalem, and “the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation, And laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison. But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth, and said, Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life. And when they heard that, they entered into the temple early in the morning, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought. But when the officers came, and found them not in the prison, they returned, and told, Saying, The prison truly found we shut with all safety, and the keepers standing without before the doors: but when we had opened, we found no man within”, and in chapter five and verse twenty-four of the book of Acts Luke shared how the religious leaders, “doubted of them whereunto this would grow where we read:
Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things,
they doubted of them whereunto this would grow.
The verse begins, “Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things, ...” Luke began with the words, “now when the high priest” which means “moreover at the time the chief and principal priest” “and the captain of the temple” or “and the commander, governor and highest magistrate belonging to the sacred worship place in Jerusalem” “and the chief priests heard these things” which means “and the high and principal priests were endowed with the faculty of hearing, perceiving and understanding the words of the ministers” they responded in the following way. Luke shared how the “high priest, captain of the temple and chief priests” perceived and understood the words from their ministers and responded in the following way.
The verse continues, “... they doubted of them whereunto this would grow.” Luke added the words, “they doubted of them” which means “the high priests, captain of the temple and chief priests were entirely at a loss and perplexed by the ministers” “whereunto this would grow” or “what would become of or happen with these events”. Luke shared how the “religious leaders” were perplexed by the words from their ministers, and they wondered what would happen when word of this was known.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the “religious leaders” heard the report from their ministers about the prison being guarded and secure and yet no one was inside, and they wondered what this meant and what the effect of it would be when it was known. God performed a miracle through His “angel” who set the apostles free, and because the “gospel” of Jesus Christ was to be spread throughout the world, God perplexed those who were opposed to it. God loves people, and sin keeps them from having a personal relationship with Him. When a person surrenders their life to His Son Jesus, He will forgive their sins, grant them everlasting life and be with them in every circumstance they encounter. Those who are wise will yield themselves to Jesus and begin a relationship with the miracle working perplexing God who cares for them so dearly.
Next time Luke shares, “then came one and told them, saying, Behold the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
