Luke the physician wrote how Peter said to the lame man at the temple, “Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I to you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God. And they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple: and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him”, and in chapter three and verse eleven of the book of Acts Luke shared, “as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them” where we read:
And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John,
all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon's, greatly wondering.
The verse begins, “And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, ...” Luke began with the words, “and as the lame man” which means “and while and during the time when the man who was deprived of foot, maimed and crippled” “which was healed” or “who was cured and made whole” “held Peter and John” which means “lay hold of, seized and fastened himself to Peter whose name means a little rock or stone and John whose name means Jehovah is a gracious giver”. Luke shared how the “lame man” who was now “cured and made whole” fastened himself to Peter and John, and as he did, the people did the following.
The verse goes on to say, “... all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon's, greatly wondering.” Luke continued with the words, “all the people” or “each, every, the whole and everyone of the men and women” “ran together unto them” which means “to rushed headlong and hastily toward Peter and John” “in the porch” or “in the portico or covered colonnade where people can stand or walk protected from the weather and the heat of the sun” “that is called Solomon's” which means “that is saluted and named as Solomon's whose name means peaceful and was the son of David the the wisest and richest king that ever lived”, “greatly wondering” or “quite astonished, terrified, amazed and marveling”. Luke shared how everyone at the temple area rushed toward Peter, John and the formally lame man who were standing in “Solomon's portico” of the temple.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn not only how the formally lame man clung to Peter and John, but also how the crowd who observed began to rush toward them. We can imagine the joy within this man who was now able to walk, and his gratitude to Peter and John was expressed by his clinging to them. People who observe supernatural events are easily attracted, and they are filled with “wonder” as they attempt to understand how those things are possible. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they yield themselves to Him, they will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life. Let all who read these words “rush” toward the only “One”, Jesus, who is able to perform an eternal miracle upon their soul.
Next time Luke shares how Peter asks the people, “why marvel you at this?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
