Luke the physician wrote how, “Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple”, and in chapter three and verse three of the book of Acts Luke shared how the lame man, “seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms” where we read:
Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms.
The verse begins, “Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple ...” Luke began with the words, “who seeing Peter” which means “the lame man observed, noticed and beheld Peter who was Jesus' disciple whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “and John” or “and John whose name means Jehovah is a gracious giver and was also Jesus' disciple” “about to go into the temple” which means “intending and having in mind to enter the sacred worship place in Jerusalem”. Luke shared how the lame man observed Peter and John intending to enter the “sacred worship place”.
The verse goes on to say, “... asked an alms.” Luke continued with the word, “asked” or “requested, entreated and beseeched” “an alms” which means “pity, mercy, charity and a donation to the poor”. Luke shared how the crippled man begged Peter and John for pity and charity.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the lame man performed his daily function of begging as people entered the “temple” in Jerusalem. He observed Peter and John about to enter the temple and asked them for a charitable donation. We shall see how they respond in our next verse, but for now, let us realize God knows the needs of every person, and when they have them, He is willing to supply their need through a relationship with His Son Jesus. Let everyone reading these words carefully examine the man who was lame and understand they too are in need like this crippled man.
Next time Luke shares how Peter tells the lame man, “look on us”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
