Expecting to Receive - Acts 3:5

Luke the physician wrote how, “Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple. Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us”, and in chapter three and verse five of the book of Acts Luke shared how the lame man, “gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them” where we read:

And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them.

The verse begins, “And he gave heed unto them, ... Luke began with the words, “and he gave heed” which means “and the crippled man gave attention” “unto them” or “ to Peter and John”. Luke shared how the “lame man” gave his attention to Peter and John.

The verse goes on to say, “... expecting to receive something of them.” Luke continued with the words, “expecting to receive something” or “anticipating, looking and waiting for a certain contribution” “of them” which means “from Peter and John”. Luke shared how the lame man was anticipating a certain donation to be given to him by Peter and John.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the lame man gave his attention to Peter and John because he thought they were going to donate alms to him. We shall see what the lame man received in our next few verses, but for now let us understand the importance of the lame man giving his attention to Peter and John. By doing so, he would receive from them, and every person who turns their attention toward the Lord God by receiving His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” will receive forgiveness of their sins and everlasting life with Him. Let all who consider these words pay attention to God in the same manner as this crippled man.

Next time Luke shares how Peter tells the lame man, “Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I to you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
