The physician Luke wrote how Peter and John were arrested for speaking to the people in the temple about the resurrection of the dead. After some discussion between them, the religious leaders put Peter and John away from them and said, “What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle has been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it. But that it spread no further among the people, let us straightly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name. And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge you”, and in chapter four and verse twenty of the book of Acts Luke shared how Peter and John said, “we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard” the religious leaders where we read:
For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.
The verse begins, “For we cannot but speak ...” Luke began with the words, “for we” which means “because, since and on account that we, religious leaders” “cannot but speak” which means “are unable, incapable and without the ability to not utter, declare or proclaim” the following words. Luke shared how Peter and John told the religious leaders they were incapable of not “speaking” the following.
The verse continues, “... the things which we have seen and heard.” Luke added the words, “the things which” or “that what” “we have seen” which means “we, Peter and John, have observed, beheld, noticed and discerned” “and heard” or “and been endowed with the faculty for hearing, perceiving, noticing and discerning”. Luke shared how Peter and John told the religious leaders they were unable to keep quiet about everything they “saw” and “heard” from Jesus.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Peter and John thought themselves incapable of keeping quiet about what they saw Jesus do and heard Him say. Anyone who carefully studies the life of Jesus and yields themselves to Him will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and enjoy a lifetime of sharing with others what they “have seen and heard”. God loves people, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to save people from their sins. Those who are wise will observe all that Jesus did and said and surrender their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Luke shares when the religious leaders, “had further threatened them, they let them go”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
